Safety & Education

ABATE of Illinois urges all motorcyclists to ride responsibly and take an accredited rider training course.

We support the education of motorcyclists and the general motoring public as the most effective method of reducing accidents, injuries and fatalities.

ABATE of Illinois' Motorcycle Awareness Program was developed with the new and inexperienced driver in mind, and teaches them how to look for, and interact in traffic with motorcycles.

It takes one full class period to present and consists of a video, oral presentation, question and answer session, and a short quiz. This all makes for a full and fast paced class period that hold's the students' attention like little else.

The presentation was developed from materials supplied by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Illinois Dept. of Transportation, the Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program of Greater Illinois, and the Safety and Education dept. of ABATE of Illinois. In addition to the awareness presentation, interested students are provided with information on "Rider Education" courses.

Ride Smart Program

Ride SmartThe "Ride Smart" program was developed by A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois, Inc. in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety. The program was brought about due to the increase in Motorcycle crashes that resulted in a fatality in 2012. A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois has always been a strong advocate for motorcycle safety and education. To this end A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois decided it was time to be proactive in reducing the motorcycle crashes. To accomplish this A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois asked IDOT, Division of Traffic Safety to work with them to get to the root cause(s) of the motorcycle crashes. Then with that information come up with programs to focus on the reduction of motorcycle crashes in Illinois and throughout our great country. The work involved going through every motorcycle crash that resulted in a fatality in Illinois in 2011 and 2012. In doing so we were able to determine what all of the root causes were. Once we determined the root causes then we could put together awareness programs that will be the most effective in each area.

Presented by Mike Myers, State Coordinator, A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois (http://abate-il.org/)

A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois is offering at no cost to any organization in Illinois a "Ride Smart" presentation. The presentation incorporates all of the root causes and discusses them in detail. This presentation does not have bar graphs, pie charts or percentages but more importantly the choices that were made in the crashes and the result of those choices. The program reviews many positive riding choices to help the motorcyclist be better prepared for their next ride. We believe life is all about the choices we make. No matter how much is said it is ultimately the riding choices that the motorcyclist make that will have the greatest impact on reducing motorcycle crashes.
